Another Pie & Mash shop gone after 100 yrs!
https://www.hackneygazette.co.uk/news/heritage/bob-cooke-s-broadway-market-pie-and-mash-shop-to-close-1-6034566

Its closure — after more than 100 years of service to its East End community — is now a familiar tale of demise: M. Manze on Chapel Market in Islington announced its closure in the summer of 2017, after 106 years, A.J. Goddard closed in Deptford last autumn, after 128 years, and G Kelly, which opened on Roman Road in 1939, has been “temporarily” closed for two years.

Yeah that’s correct MMG.

Eastenders is on East India Dock Rd opposite the old Poplar baths.

Maureen’s is still going strong.

I vaguely remember Maureen’s being on the A13 close to Barclays Bank.
She then moved to the library end of the market close to the chippy (Captains Table, is that still there?) and someone else took over the old shop (Eastenders?)
Even more surprised to learn there’s 2 shops still going.

Remember Maureen’s well as lived in Poplar till ‘98, very decent p&m and Maureen was a lovely bubbly lady.
Haven’t been back in years and am surprised they’re still in business (Halal pies)?
Does she still work there?

Re: Another Pie & Mash shop gone after 100 yrs!
I think the last new (to me) pie 'n' mash shop I discovered and liked only had six weeks life left before it was closed down before being demolished to make way for the Olympic Park, Stratford...

It's foundations probably aren't hidden under the London Stadium, but they might be

Glad you too remember Duncombes .it was on the right hand side of plashet grove just past the funeral place (Jewish oribinally perhaps)going away from Upton Park station.
Remember the same lot who relocated to green street still serving the best pie n mash round that manor also know the Robbins family and still do.
Good lot nice bunch who owned stalls on green street market. Done very well back in the day.
Still decent pie shops the Robbins own.
Regardless of what gavros says.
Funnily enough I never Rated Nathan's.
Ice cream scooped mash nah not for me.
Smeared with a wooden spoon down the side of a plate is propper.
Manzies down tower bridge road

I actually smelt pie n mash reading that description. You should become a copywriter or a food critic.

Re: Another Pie & Mash shop gone after 100 yrs!
Kelly’s in Romans Road was my haunt when growing up in Bow.

There was a place in Goodmayes called The Cockney Grub house which was very decent although didn’t quite have the right consistency...think that closed a couple of years back.

I then found a place in Elm Park called Stokemoores and it is fucking lovely .... they were not open when I went down last Wednesday - hope they have not gone the way of so many others ... anyone know?

I remember those, we used to drink in The Albion from 11am to 2pm 6 pints of Ben Truman and then head for double double, before heading to the ground.
